The Public Radio Television of Turkey (RTÜK) has announced the opening of an investigation against the streaming platform Disney Plus after it announced the cancellation of the series it was going to broadcast about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the modern Turkey, which was going to to be released coinciding with the celebration this year of the first centenary of the Republic of Turkey. According to several media outlets, the series will not be broadcast without even having been released after powerful Armenian lobbies such as ANCA (Armenian National Committee of America) called for a boycott against Disney + accusing the platform of making a series about a “criminal of war”.
In Turkey, the cancellation of the series about Atatürk – which will finally only be aired as a film in Turkish theaters – has unleashed great controversy in society and the country’s political class, which accuses Disney Plus of “bowing to political pressure of the Armenian lobbies” and of not respecting the history and values of the Turkish Republic. The spokesman for Erdoğan’s AKP party, Ömer Çelik, accused the Armenian diaspora in the US of resorting to history to “spread falsehoods” with the sole aim of “harming the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia”.
