Turkish police had to intervene to disperse a protest organised by pro-Palestinian activists outside the İncirlik air base in the Turkish province of Adana, which is jointly used by the Turkish and US air forces. The protest had been organised by the humanitarian aid foundation İHH, the same one that organised in 2010 the so-called “Freedom Flotilla” to Gaza that culminated in the brutal Israeli assault on the ship Mavi Marmara, and that on this occasion had organised a convoy with dozens of vehicles that left Istanbul 2 days ago and arrived in Adana this very morning.
While Turkish authorities allowed the activists – who wanted to protest against Israel’s bombing of Gaza and US support – to demonstrate in a designated area away from the base amid a heavy police presence, when the protesters headed towards the İncirlik airbase after 2pm several activists attempted to approach the facility, at which point Turkish riot police intervened to disperse the protest; it has been organised coinciding with a scheduled visit to Turkey by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who is due to arrive in Turkey today.
