Turkish officials welcomed Azerbaijan‘s decision not to attend the EU-organised peace talks with Armenia in Granada, Spain, after the Baku government called for Turkey’s participation in the talks, a condition that was rejected by France and Germany. “Mr Aliyev cancelled his visit to Spain because Turkey’s participation was not accepted as a condition for the meeting. We would like to express our appreciation for this decision,” said during a press conference yesterday Ömer Çelik, deputy chairman of Erdoğan‘s AKP party, who considered that the so-called Minsk Group has only favoured the Armenian occupation of Karabakh, a territory internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan.
“France, Germany, the EU and Armenia are attending the meeting. They invite Azerbaijan, but not Turkey. Can you imagine that?,” Çelik questioned after the Azerbaijani president confirmed that he would not attend the negotiations on Karabakh organised in Granada following the rejection by France and Germany of the participation of Turkey, Baku’s ally and key to stability in the South Caucasus region.
The Azerbaijani government said in a statement that it does not see the need to participate in a meeting in this format, especially after recent actions and statements in favour of Armenia by authorities in France (where a large Armenian diaspora lives), including the delivery of weapons or accusations against Azerbaijan. However, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said he will attend the meeting. “Azerbaijan does not see the need to address the problems of the region with countries that are far away from the region,” said a statement from the Azerbaijani presidency, in a clear gesture of support for Turkey.
