Turkish Foreign Ministry has criticised in a statement the resolution adopted yesterday by the European Parliament (EP), which addressed the situation in “Nagorno-Karabakh following Azerbaijan‘s attack and continued threats against Armenia”: a text that the Turkish government has not hesitated to describe as a “symbol of irresponsibility, prejudice, bias and ignorance“. “We condemn this resolution against our country, based on the discourse of a group of populist MEPs who for years have been seeking baseless accusations against Turkey,” the Ankara statement said.
The note issued by the Turkish foreign ministry underlines that in European politics “populism, racism, Islamophobia, anti-multicultural and anti-integration sentiments” are gaining more and more strength, which “is reflected in the current composition of the European Parliament”; Turkey carries out intense efforts for “peace, stability and prosperity in the South Caucasus“, as well as in the process of normalisation of relations with Armenia and in mediation between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the conflict in Karabakh, the communiqué recalls, concluding that such “irresponsible” EP resolutions “are not taken seriously” by Turkey or by anyone but “marginal sectors”.
