Shortly before the defense ministers of Turkey, Russia, Iran and Syria met today in Moscow to discuss the normalization of relations between Ankara and Damascus and the future of Syria, the Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu declared yesterday evening that Turkey is not considering a withdrawal from northern Syria or ending its anti-terrorist operations in the region until there are conditions of “full security”, something that “right now is completely impossible since it would unleash a very serious threat” to the Turkey’s security, since “terrorists would amass in our borders.”
“An exit of Turkey from the region would create a power vacuum that terrorist groups would rush to fill,” said Çavuşoğlu, who insisted on defending Syria’s territorial integrity. “We pay a price every day to keep our homeland safe: not because we like it, nor because we covet Syrian territory,” he recalled.
