Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed on Sunday that one suicide bomber blew himself up and another was shot dead by Turkish police during an attack this morning on the National Police headquarters in Ankara, the country’s capital. Yerlikaya explained that the terrorists approached the entrance of the building in a van, and that one of them set off the explosives he was carrying and died on the spot, while another was killed during the ensuing shooting, in which two police officers were slightly injured.
Following the incident, which occurred not far from the Turkey’s National Assembly (parliament) building, police cordoned off the area and traffic was closed on Ankara’s Atatürk Avenue, one of the city’s main traffic venues. The explosion could be heard loudly in the Kızılay neighbourhood, in the heart of the Turkish capital. For now it is unknown which group is behind the attack, but terrorist organisations such as the PKK, the Free Kurdistan Falcons (TAK, a more violent offshoot of the PKK itself), the DHKP-C (a group that until recently was believed to have disbanded), or Daesh, have carried out similar suicide attacks in the past.
