The so-called “Van Cat Village” (Van Kedi Villası, in Turkish), a breeding center for this famous breed of cats in Van (a province in eastern Turkey), has become a focus of attention that attracts tourists both from Turkey itself and from the rest of the world: in the first 5 months of 2023 alone, more than 90,000 people visited the center, stimulating local tourism in the region.
Established in 1992, the center has gained popularity over the years as a place dedicated to the breeding and preservation of Van cats, an unique breed native to Turkey that is characterized by its white fur, bicolor eyes (blue and honey), and for his fondness for swimming in the water. In this village, tourists who come can see Van’s cats, pet them, and even adopt them. Contrary to the general belief, the studies carried out here have also shown that cats of this breed – one of the few in the world that maintains its genetic purity – have an excellent sense of hearing.
