The terrible floods that ravaged several districts of Istanbul on Tuesday night left at least two people dead, after torrential rains fell on the north of the city and particularly affected the districts of Arnavutköy and Başakşehir, as well as Küçükçekmece; precisely the governor of Istanbul informed the media that the two dead people resided in the latter two districts, located on the outskirts of the European side of the Turkish metropolis.
The floods, which flooded streets and roads leaving dozens of vehicles, homes and businesses under water, also affected the metro network, forcing the closure of the Turgut Özal and Siteler stations in Başakşehir, where social media were filled with videos showing how the water came down the stairs of a metro station, forming some kind of unusual waterfalls.
The worst moments of anguish, however, came when dozens of people were left trapped inside the public library of Başakşehir (Millet Kıraathanesi): some of the trapped people posted videos on social media showing how the floodwater was up to their knees, and asking for help; fortunately the mayor of the district, Yasin Kartoğlu, reported that they were all safely evacuated and taken back to their homes.
Interestingly, the torrential rains – which reached 125 litres per square metre – and flooding mainly affected the European side of Istanbul, rather than the Asian side; however, there were also reports in the latter of multiple lightning strikes in the districts of Beykoz, Kavacık, Kadiköy, Sultanbeyli and Üsküdar.
