Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, has announced that the high-speed train line between Ankara and İzmir will be ready in 2027, a year earlier than originally scheduled. The project, which will connect the capital with the country’s 3rd largest city (after Istanbul and Ankara itself), will reduce a journey that currently takes 14 hours by train to just 3 hours and 40 minutes.
According to Uraloğlu, the high-speed train project between Ankara and İzmir will benefit the whole region by boosting trade; moreover, more than 7 million people living in the provinces of Afyonkarahisar, Uşak, Manisa and İzmir will have access to the high-speed line through the 9 stations that the route will include. It is expected that 13.3 million passengers and 90 million tonnes of freight will travel each year along the new line, whose design involves the construction of 49 tunnels with a total length of 40.7 km, as well as 133 bridges and viaducts with a total length of 21.2 km.
