Turkish intelligence services (MİT) have eliminated a senior member of the YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK terrorist group, Turkish government security sources announced this Thursday, saying that Zülfiye Binbir, alias “Rojna”, was a prominent leader of the organisation in charge of YPG/PKK finances. A member of the group since 1993, Binbir was reportedly “neutralised” in Rmelan, a town in the northeastern Syrian province of Hassakeh, bordering Turkey.
Turkey has for years denounced the YPG as the same organisation under a different name than the PKK, an organisation recognised as a terrorist group by the EU and the US itself. Washington supports the YPG financially and logistically and provides it with weapons, considering it the main force in the region against Daesh; Ankara denounces that this compromises its security and that of the entire region, contributing to instability and endangering the unity of Syria, where in recent days fighting has intensified in the large eastern province of Deir el-Zour between the YPG – which operates under the umbrella of the SDF – and Arab tribes opposed to the expansion of the armed group.
