The worrying effects of climate change continue to be felt in Turkey: catastrophic torrential rains, increased tornadoes and disastrous droughts are some of the consequences of increasingly modified weather patterns and a dramatic rise in average temperatures. One of the places where the effects are being felt most is Lake Van, Turkey’s largest lake: after several seagulls were found dead at the end of August due to heat and lack of food, experts warn that the lake is drying up due to intense evaporation. Residents of the area have seen how the receding waters – whose level has dropped by 2 metres – have led to the appearance of several islets, which are growing in size every year.
