Turkey, raid against illegal alcohol

More than 40 dead in two weeks for consuming illegal alcohol

The death toll in Turkey from illegal alcohol consumption has now exceeded 40 in the last two weeks. In Istanbul alone, 22 people have died from consuming fake alcohol adulterated with methanol, a highly toxic solvent that causes blindness and death. Despite the increase in the number of raids against clandestine distillation workshops – with dozens of detainees and thousands of bottles confiscated – and the appeals of the authorities asking citizens for collaboration to fight this problem, the number of victims who resort to bootleg alcohol continues to increase due to rising prices.
