During the donors’ conference that began today in Brussels to raise funds to help in the reconstruction of Turkey and Syria after the devastating earthquakes of last February, the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU will give an aid of €1 billion to Turkey to help with reconstruction tasks in the south-east of the country, in addition to another 108 million for humanitarian assistance and emergency aid tasks in Syria.
“The needs of the survivors are massive and urgent,” Von Der Leyen recalled. For his part, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan, who estimated the damage caused by the earthquake at €97 billion euros, thanked once again during the conference for international aid to the region affected by the earthquakes, greater than Portugal. The destruction caused by the earthquakes is equivalent to 10% of Turkey’s GDP: the cost of rebuilding the houses alone exceeds $66 billion.
