Several witnesses and cameras recorded the impressive moment when a 7-storey building that had been damaged by a major earthquake, collapsed completely and was reduced to rubble in Turkey.
Turkish news agencies reported that the events took place two days ago in the İskenderun (Alexandretta) district of Hatay province, one of the worst affected by the two successive earthquakes that struck southeastern Turkey two years ago, measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale and leaving a tragic death toll of more than 53,000 dead.
As part of the demolition work on buildings damaged in that disaster – which is still continuing two years after the violent earthquakes – a seven-storey high building in the Mustafa Kemal neighbourhood of İskenderun, just south of the city, was demolished in a controlled manner using construction machinery in the process.
The impressive moment when the huge building collapsed and was completely reduced to rubble was recorded by several people who witnessed the events and also by cameras located in the vicinity. Despite the spectacular nature of the event, no injuries or other incidents were reported during the successful operation.
Described as ‘the worst disaster in Turkey in a century’, the earthquakes that struck south-east Turkey on 6 February 2023 had their epicentre in Kahramanmaraş, but almost half of those killed died in Hatay, where in towns such as Antakya (Antioch) up to 80% of buildings were destroyed or severely damaged.
