Uğur Şahin, founder together with his wife Özlem Türeci of the German biotech company BioNTech, world-renowned for developing Europe’s first approved coronavirus vaccine (based on mRNA technology), has announced that cancer treatments being developed by his company, especially for lung, pancreatic and colon cancer, will be commercialised in 2026. The new drugs, which will strengthen the body’s own defences against tumours, will be commercialised once they pass further tests, he said.
Last month, Uğur Şahin and his wife Özlem Türeci, both founders of BioNTech, also announced that their company is researching a therapeutic cancer vaccine that could be ready by 2030; in the short term, BioNTech is already working on developing vaccines for new variants of the coronavirus, including the EG.5.1 (Eris), which will be ready in September. Şahin and Türeci live in Germany, but both are children of Turkish immigrants.
