Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci, the Turkish immigrant marriage founders of BioNtech, the German biotechnology company that in collaboration with Pfizer has developed the first vaccine approved in the EU against the coronavirus, received yesterday the highest decoration in Germany, the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, at a ceremony in Berlin presided over by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel. “You are an amazing couple, researchers, heroes, even saviours of the world. This vaccine has no nationality: it is neither German, nor Turkish, nor American,” Steinmeier said. Şahin is the son of a Turkish immigrant who went to work at the Ford factory in Cologne in the 1960s. Türeci is the daughter of a surgeon from Istanbul who also moved to Germany for work reasons in the 60s.
