Turkey added two new patrol vessels to its navy with the launching this weekend of two HİSAR-class ships of its own design and manufacture, the TCG Akhisar and TCG Koçhisar, two of the 10 patrol vessels that the Turkish Armed Forces plan to add to their fleet to increase their maritime surveillance capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean, but which will also play an important role in intelligence and surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue missions, and counter-terrorism and special operations.
The launching ceremony took place on Saturday at a shipyard outside Istanbul, an event attended by numerous authorities, including Defence Minister Yaşar Güler, who noted that with the addition of these two new patrol vessels, Turkey’s navy consolidates its position as the 10th most powerful in the world. Developed as a variant of the MİLGEM-class corvettes, the HİSAR class has been adapted to use a different design and propulsion system, allowing these patrol vessels to be built at lower cost and in less time.
