Istanbul may have to resort to draw water accumulated at the bottom of dams if the drought persists during the autumn and winter months, has warned Dursun Yıldız, chairman of the Turkish Water Policy Association, adding that this will be a challenge due to the low quality of water obtained at those levels.
“The reservoirs that provide water to the European side of Istanbul are dry. In the absence of rainfall, preparations are underway to draw water from the bottom of the dams, from what we call ‘dead volume’,” explained Yıldız, who stressed that even if the city receives rain in October, the drought problem will not be solved and the relief “will only be temporary”. Currently the average level of dams in Istanbul – a metropolis of 16 million people – is below 25 per cent; the Sazlıdere reservoir in Büyükçekme, one of the main water reserves for the European side of Istanbul, is at only 4% of its capacity.
