8 teachers were injured in an accident this morning in the eastern Turkish province of Muş when the bus carrying them to the schools where they were teaching in a rural area skidded off the road and crashed due to ice and snow.
Turkish media reported that the accident occurred when a minibus was transporting a group of teachers working in the villages of Ziyaret, Göl, Köşk and Yelalan in the centre of the province; it was just at the entrance to the village of Yelalan that the driver lost control of the vehicle and the bus ended up crashing into the safety barriers of a bridge, fortunately without falling into the icy river.
Several emergency teams, including medical personnel and gendarmes, went to the scene of the incident where they attended to 8 teachers who were travelling on the bus and who were slightly injured. They were taken by ambulance to the public hospital in the provincial capital after receiving first aid at the scene of the accident. The evolution of all of them is favourable and they are expected to be discharged in a few hours, while the causes of the accident are being investigated, although everything suggests that the minibus left the road due to the presence of ice on the road.
Ice was also reportedly behind another accident that occurred in the last few hours in the province of Aksaray, some 200 km southeast of Ankara, when a bus carrying a group of workers overturned amid heavy snowfall in the region, injuring 15 people, including the driver himself, none of whom were seriously injured.
After a rather mild start to the winter, Turkey has been hit in recent days by a cold storm that has left heavy snowfall in many provinces of the country, causing major problems for road transport and leaving hundreds of villages isolated. The snow has also affected Istanbul, which yesterday had to suspend all maritime traffic on the Bosphorus due to dense fog.
