Turkey‘s Aerospace Industries (TAI) signed today a cooperation agreement with Airbus in Istanbul to accelerate the export of the Turkish Hürjet light combat fighter to Spain, which last May signed a deal with Ankara to buy several dozen of this aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of F-5s.
According to Turkish news agency Anatolia, the cooperation agreement was signed on Thursday during the 17th edition of the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF 2025), which began on 22 July in Istanbul and is being held simultaneously at the Istanbul Exhibition Centre, Atatürk Airport, Wow Hotel and Ataköy Port.
The agreement defines the roles of TAI and Airbus in the Hürjet project and seals the collaboration between the two companies in the process of the Spanish government’s acquisition of these jet aircraft for training flights, in order to accelerate the process of incorporating the Hürjet fighters into the Spanish Air Force‘s inventory.
The document signed today also sets out the details of the export of these aircraft from Turkey, which will eventually provide 30 Hürjet fighter jets to Spain; the final sales contract is expected to be signed by the end of this year, with the first deliveries of the Turkish fighter to begin in 2028.
The Hürjet is an advanced light combat fighter with supersonic flight capability and is intended for training flights and air support roles. Designed with a new user interface, this highly manoeuvrable fighter jet is especially suited to train pilots to operate the new 5th generation fighter jets, such as the KAAN developed by Turkey. The agreement signed today between TAI and Airbus is an important step that strengthens the aviation and defence cooperation between Turkey and Spain, which are also planning the joint development of the new Turkish aircraft carrier.
