The image of amateur fishermen casting their rod into the waters of the Bosphorus is almost inseparable from Istanbul; but experts warn that leads used by fishermen pollute the water and the food chain, ending up in fish and ultimately in humans. A single fishing shop can sell more than 100 kilos of lead per month, a material that has already been partially banned in some countries. Lead accumulated over decades at the bottom of the Bosphorus is counted by tons, which in turn poses another risk: “With so much toxic material in the environment, highly resistant super bacteria are created,” say scientists.
