Torrential rains in the last few hours in the Marmara region have caused severe floods in cities such as Istanbul and Bursa, paralysing life in large parts of both cities by turning streets and avenues into rivers and lakes, forcing the emergency services to intervene to rescue many citizens trapped in their vehicles or homes.
In Istanbul, the rainfall was particularly heavy on the European side of the city, where long caravans of vehicles formed in districts such as Bahçelievler and Yenibosna, in the west of the city, as floods caused traffic to collapse and even stop completely in several areas. Sultangazi and Bağcılar were also two other districts particularly affected by the rains in the Turkish metropolis.
Further south, in the city of Bursa, the bad weather was also noticeably felt in the ancient Ottoman capital, where Turkish agencies reported that torrential rain – accompanied by hail – fell in just two hours over the city, starting at 14:30 on Thursday, bringing the city to a complete standstill and even causing flooding in several metro stations.
The urban districts of Osmangazi, Yıldırım and Nilüfer in central Bursa, as well as Orhaneli, Büyükorhan, Harmancık and Keleş on the outskirts of the city, were the worst affected by the torrential rains, which caused several rivers to overflow, damaging buildings and vehicles along the riverbanks. Meteorologists reported that more than 100 lightning strikes and about 10 litres per square metre fell on the city in just 30 minutes.
