Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan promised during a visit today to Hatay province, one of the most affected by earthquakes in Turkey, to completely rebuild the cities devastated by the quakes, which have affected 11 provinces in a region larger than Portugal causing more than 41,000 deaths. Erdoğan, whose government, he said, is being advised by seismology experts, affirmed that the reconstruction will begin next month and that it will include not only buildings, but also the economic and industrial infrastructure as well as the historical and cultural heritage; the President also referred to the reconstruction of cities such as historic Antakya, where at least 80% of the buildings must be demolished, and proposed moving new residential areas away from the plains to avoid the phenomenon of “soil liquefaction” during the earthquakes.
