Two earthquakes that reached 6.4 and 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale occurred this evening in Hatay province, precisely two weeks after the two devastating earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.6 that, with epicenter in the southeastern province of Kahramanmaraş, have particularly affected Hatay and its capital, Antakya (Antioch), where an estimated 80% of buildings have been destroyed or will have to be demolished. On this occasion, today’s first earthquake occurred at 20:04 local time (18:04 CET) at a depth of 16.7 kilometers and with epicenter in Defne, a peri-urban district on the outskirts of Antakya; it was followed only 3 minutes later by another earthquake of magnitude 5.8 that occurred only 7 kilometers deep, multiplying its effects, with its epicenter in the nearby coastal district of Samandağ.
Both earthquakes, which could be felt in several provinces as well as in neighboring Syria, and even in Egypt and Iraq, were subsequently followed by at least two aftershocks measuring 4.5 and 3.9. For now, damage has been reported to several buildings affected by the earthquakes two weeks ago, some of which would have collapsed according to witness reports. Authorities have asked the population to evacuate the coastal areas due to a possible tsunami risk.
