Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan declared a state of emergency in the 10 provinces affected by the wave of earthquakes that swept through southeastern Turkey yesterday, causing 3,549 deaths and more than 22,000 injuries so far. In an address to the nation delivered from a emergency coordination center in Ankara, Erdoğan stressed that the quakes caused much more extensive destruction compared to similar quakes, calling it “one of the biggest disasters” to hit to Turkey and the world; he also asked citizens to collaborate by making donations, and reported that more than 53,000 emergency personnel work in the disaster area, where 8,000 survivors have been rescued despite the harsh weather.
