The death toll from the 7.8 earthquake that shook southeastern Turkey, and also affected several provinces in northern Syria, now exceeds 1,600 deaths, although the figures are uncertain since some of the affected areas are under control of the Assad regime, and others are controlled by Syrian rebels. Rescue teams operating in the area are desperately asking for international help; but to the lack of means adds coordination problems, while time is running out to rescue hundreds of families who are still trapped under the rubble of the buildings, many of which were already in poor condition before the earthquake due to the civil war.
