The United Nations has warned of the high risk of a cholera epidemic in northwestern Syria, the area controlled by the opposition to the Bashar al-Assad regime. Following the earthquake in neighboring Turkey that devastated northern Syria, leaving some 5 million people homeless in the Arab country, food prices have skyrocketed and the population faces the destruction of basic infrastructure, including water supply, to which must be added a particularly dry winter that has caused restrictions throughout the country. Northern Syria has been suffering from a cholera outbreak since September 2022, which had already left more than twenty dead before the earthquake.
