An earthquake in Turkey measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck for the fifth time this month the southeastern Turkish province of Malatya, sparking renewed fear among the population, who still remember the terrible destruction suffered by Malatya after the 7.8 and 7.6 earthquakes that devastated the entire region last February, causing more than 50,000 dead, and which were described as the worst seismic disaster of the last century.
The quake struck at 8:35 a.m. Turkish time (7:35 CET, Central European Time) at a depth of about 7 kilometres and, again, with its epicentre in the Yeşilyurt district, as in previous earthquakes in Malatya this month. No casualties or material damage have yet been reported, but many people ran out into the streets fearing that buildings might collapse. The earthquake could be felt in several neighbouring provinces, including Kahramanmaraş, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep.
