An earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale struck eastern Turkey on Thursday afternoon with its epicenter in Yeşilyurt district in the eastern Malatya province. The earthquake occurred only 7 kilometers deep, which made its effects felt even more, which unleashed panic among a large part of the population, who mostly took to the streets fearing building collapse.
The authorities, who are still assessing the level of damage, and have recommended the population not consume tap water for now, reported at least 22 minor injured, most from trying to jump out of windows or similar actions resulting from panic. The strength of the earthquake could also be felt in other neighboring provinces such as Kahramanmaraş, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep; it must be remembered that both these provinces and Malatya were the most affected by the 7.6 and 7.8 earthquakes that devastated southeastern Turkey last February, causing more than 50,000 dead.
