Two earthquakes shook the southeastern Turkish province of Malatya yesterday evening, triggering panic among the local population but causing no major damage or injuries, Turkish media reported. The first quake struck just 7 km deep in the Battalgazi district, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale; the second tremor struck just three minutes later with a magnitude of 4.7, causing thousands of people to take to the streets in fear of possible buildings collapse.
According to Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the two earthquakes caused no casualties but several teams of emergency services were sent to the region to inspect for possible damage. Malatya, a southeastern Anatolian province, was already hit by a wave of earthquakes for several days last August; this Turkish province was also one of those affected by the 7.6 and 7.8 earthquakes that devastated the region on 6 February, killing more than 50,000 people and causing widespread destruction in Malatya.
