Social media was abuzz in Turkey on Friday night after numerous witnesses reported seeing a huge meteor crossing across the sky over Istanbul, Ankara and other cities in the country. Many people questioned the origin of the object, which was sighted with a strange colour, even suggesting that it could be a rocket or even a satellite.
The unusual phenomenon was recorded by many people, who captured images with their mobile phones of the fireball crossing the atmosphere divided in several parts, clearly visible in the middle of the night and crossing over emblematic places such as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (Second Bosphorus Bridge) in Istanbul, as seen in some of the videos disseminated through social networks. According to reports published by numerous media outlets in Turkey, the object – or objects – were observed with a greenish-yellow colour in the videos posted on the Internet.
Before the doubts generated by many Turkish citizens about the origin of the object, the Turkish Space Agency (TUA) informed through its Twitter profile that the colour of the meteorites when passing through the Earth’s atmosphere varies depending on factors such as the chemical composition of the celestial body, its speed, or the gases present at that moment in the atmosphere.
In addition to Istanbul and Ankara, Turkish media reported that the meteorite could also be seen crossing the sky in other cities such as Bursa, Sakarya, Kocaeli and Çorum, in northern Turkey.
