A Russian man accused of links to the Daesh terrorist group and working under a false identity at the new Akkuyu nuclear power plant has been arrested in Turkey, according to Turkish media citing security sources familiar with the case.
According to published reports, police in the Turkish province of Mersin reportedly arrested a man from Russia who was hiding his real identity under a false name; the accused was subsequently remanded in custody by a court, but no further information about the operation has been released.
The Akkuyu nuclear power plant, located in the province of Mersin, will be Turkey’s first nuclear power plant; with a total cost of some $20 billion, it is being built by the Russian consortium Rosatom and its four reactors are expected to be fully operational by 2028, providing 10% of Turkey’s electricity needs. In recent days Turkish police has arrested hundreds of people suspected of links to Daesh following the attack on a Catholic church in Istanbul, in which two armed men murdered a Turkish citizen attending mass: only a gun malfunction prevented the terrorists from committing a massacre.
