Airlines operating flights in Turkey, including Turkish Airlines and Pegasus, will begin imposing fines on passengers who unfasten their seat belts, leave their seats, or open the cabin luggage compartment before the aircraft has come to a complete stop, according to new regulations approved by the Turkish civil aviation authorities.
According to several Turkish media outlets, the update to the regulations by the Turkish General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) seeks to improve passenger safety and ensure that passengers disembark the aircraft in a more orderly manner. The new regulation, which came into force this month, has been adopted due to complaints from several passengers and the growing number of violations of safety rules during the taxiing manoeuvre (movement on the ground) of aircraft after landing, detected during flight inspections.
‘Despite announcements informing passengers of the rules, many stand up before the aircraft reaches its parking position and before the seat belt sign is turned off… This behaviour endangers the safety of passengers and luggage and does not respect the satisfaction and priority of departure of other passengers,’ the SHGM said in a statement.
According to a circular issued by the SHGM, all commercial airlines operating flights in Turkey must announce to passengers over the PA system a revised version of the notice that they must remain seated with their seat belts fastened until the aircraft has come to a complete stop, now also warning them that those who fail to comply with these rules will be recorded and reported.
Fines also for not waiting for the passenger in front to exit
The new aviation regulations approved by the Turkish civil aviation authorities stipulate that passengers who unfasten their seat belts prematurely, stand up or open the overhead luggage compartment before the aircraft has come to a complete stop and the seat belt sign has been turned off, may be subject to a financial penalty. In addition, the new regulation also provides for fines for passengers who step into the aisle without waiting for passengers in the row in front of them to exit, in order to ensure a quick, orderly and incident-free exit from the aircraft.
According to information published in the media, Turkish Airlines has already issued an official notification to cabin crews informing them of this new regulation, which will apply to all domestic flights and also to international flights operated by airlines from Turkey, such as Turkish Airlines itself, Pegasus, SunExpress, Ajet, etc. Although the circular issued by the Turkish civil aviation authorities does not specify the fine that passengers who leave their seats before the end of the flight will face, Turkish media claim that the fine for each passenger will be 60 euros (70 dollars).
