An inexplicable incident has scandalised Turkey after images were revealed of how the canteen of a school in Gaziantep, a province in the south-east of the country, was serving sandwiches to children wrapped in pages from the Quran, prompting parents to lodge a complaint with the authorities.
According to numerous Turkish media reports in recent hours, the incident took place at the Edebali primary school in the Şehitkamil district, east of the city of Gaziantep. Apparently, for reasons unknown, the canteen manager decided to use pages from the holy book of Muslims – in a particularly conservative area of the country – to wrap the sandwiches he was serving to the schoolchildren.
When their children told them what had happened, the parents went to the school where they lodged a complaint with the school management, who immediately decided to terminate the contract with the company that ran the school canteen. The Gaziantep National Education Directorate has also announced the opening of an investigation, according to the provincial governor, who announced the ‘urgent dispatch of an inspector’.
Turkish press reported in recent hours that the school canteen manager, who claims that the incident was ‘the result of an oversight,’ had apparently purchased several batches of old books at the beginning of the school year to use as disposable paper in the dining room. Images of sandwiches wrapped in pages containing verses from the Quran have spread throughout Turkey and have been widely shared on social media, where many users have expressed their shock and outrage at what happened.
