The Cappadocia region, one of the main destinations for tourism in Turkey, broke its tourist record in 2023 with nearly 5 million visitors, both local and foreign, according to the most recent data published, showing an increase in the number of tourists of around 21% compared to 2022.
In total, 4,826. 622 people visited in 2023 places such as the Archaeology and Ethnography Museums of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Hacıbektaş; the underground cities of Karanlık, El Nazar and Gülşehir, Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı, Özkonak, Tatlarin and Mazı; the Göreme Open Air Museum; the Ruins of Zelve and the Open Palace of Gülşehir, the Hacıbektaş Veli Museum, or the Hacıbektaş-Atatürk House Museum.
“It is very satisfying to break the historical record of visitors to the Cappadocia region, known for its natural, cultural and historical values, its employment opportunities and its share of welfare. Our greatest hope is that the number of visitors will exceed 5 million by 2024. I would like to thank our Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the managers of tourism companies, employees in the sector and our tourism NGOs, who have contributed to reaching this figure,” said Nevşehir Mayor Ali Fidan.
“We have had a great demand from Latin American markets, Mexico, Brazil, South America and Colombia. Last year there were a lot of South Koreans from the Asian market, as well as Malaysia and Indonesia. We were not able to get exactly what we expected from the Japanese market, but we have high hopes for 2024. There is currently a big demand from the Chinese market, and we expect the number of tourists in Cappadocia from China to increase at the end of this month, thanks to the Chinese New Year,” said the region’s mayor.
