Turkey’s Cappadocia region, one of Turkey’s top tourist destinations famous for its fairy chimney landscapes, underground cities, cave monasteries and balloon tours, has broken a record number of tourists this year, according to Ali Fidan, governor of Nevşehir, a province in the heart of Cappadocia. “In the first 10 months of 2023, we have surpassed the record number of visitors, which was 4,192,070 in 2022. By the end of the year, we expect the number of tourists to reach 5 million,” said Fidan, who also highlighted the growing importance in Cappadocia of health and religious tourism, and even gastronomic tourism.
In total, the Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Hacıbektaş Archaeology and Ethnography Museums, Karanlık, El Nazar, Gülşehir, Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı, Özkonak, Tatlarin and Mazı underground cities, Göreme Open Air Museum, Zelve ancient site, Gülşehir Open Palace Ruins, Hacıbektaş Veli Museum and Hacıbektaş Atatürk House, received between January and October this year 4,256,129 tourists, a record number. According to Fidan, the top five tourists visiting Cappadocia are from Spain, the United States, Indonesia, South Korea and Italy.
