A Turkish Airlines plane carrying a group of passengers from Istanbul to Antalya – a popular tourist destination on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast – had to turn around and make an emergency landing at the Turkish metropolis’ airport after being struck by lightning shortly after taking off.
According to Turkish media reports, shortly after the plane took off at 9:25 a.m. on 29 January, the flight commander informed the control tower at Istanbul Airport that the aircraft had been struck by lightning, requesting to return to the airport and make an emergency landing. The aircraft, which landed safely on the runway at 10:16, underwent a thorough inspection in search for any damage caused by the incident.
Another curious incident took place a few days earlier on a plane taking off from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen International Airport for the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh; after take-off, several passengers alerted the cabin crew that they heard strange noises coming from the cargo, with some claiming that they could hear cries for help. The pilot finally decided to make an emergency landing at Antalya airport, where after a thorough 3-hour inspection nothing abnormal was found in the hold and the plane was able to continue on its route.
But for interesting incidents the one that took place a few weeks ago on a Turkish Airlines flight covering the route between Istanbul and Athens; in this case it was not necessary to request an emergency landing because the plane was still on the runway, but the pilot had to cancel the take-off manoeuvre and return to the terminal, after the passengers informed the crew that there was a cat wandering around the cabin.
