In the ninth round of the Turkish Trendyol Super Lig, Fenerbahçe beat Fatih Karagümrük 2-1 at the Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium in Istanbul to record their fifth consecutive win over their opponents, currently bottom of the table. The match, officiated by referee Ali Şansalan, pitted the home side coached by Domenico Tedesco against Marcel Licka’s visitors.
The Istanbul side’s goals came from Anderson Talisca – who opened the scoring with a 23rd-minute penalty after VAR confirmed a foul in the box on Nene Dorgeles – and Marco Asensio, who extended the lead in the 41st minute by slipping it between the keeper’s legs.
Serginho, meanwhile, scored Karagümrük’s only goal in the 59th minute with a spectacular strike that skimmed the crossbar. The visitors also had Jure Balkovec sent off after picking up a second yellow card in the 83rd minute. Minutes earlier, Atakan Çankaya’s goal had been disallowed for offside.
With the win, Fenerbahçe maintained their historic dominance over lowly Fatih Karagümrük, whom they have beaten in their last five matches with a record of 13 goals scored and eight conceded. Karagümrük’s last win over the Yellow Canaries was 65 years ago, on 12 November 1959, when they won 2-0.
After matchday nine, Fenerbahçe now has 19 points and moves up to third position in the standings, while Fatih Karagümrük remains bottom of the Turkish league with just three points. Beşiktaş, meanwhile, suffered a humiliating defeat at home to Gençlerbirliği of Ankara and now has just 13 points in a table led by reigning league champion Galatasaray.
