A Fenerbahçe without Mourinho -after his dismissal following the team’s exit from the Champions League- beat Trabzonspor yesterday by the minimum in the 5th round of the Turkish first division football league, in a match played in Kadıköy (Istanbul) in which the controversy over the refereeing was once again the protagonist.
The controversy over the refereeing started only 10 minutes into the game: Onuachu scored a beautiful headed goal which, after a VAR review, was not only disallowed for an alleged foul by the Nigerian player on Slovakian Milan Škriniar, but the referee also punished Onuachu with a yellow card. The images are there, and it is hard to believe that Škriniar’s pained gesture of throwing his hands to his face was not a fake.
But things were to get even worse for the Black Sea team. On 16 minutes Okay Yokuşlu made a brutal tackle on Kerem Aktürkoğlu, totally unjustifiable and straight to the ankle of the player from the Turkish city of Izmit, which the referee awarded a yellow card; again a VAR review, however, decided that the action deserved a straight red, leaving the visitors a player down for the rest of the game.
From then on Fenerbahçe’s dominance was clear, and near the end of the first half En Nesyri picked up a loose ball in the six-yard box to make it 1-0. Despite this clear dominance by the team coached since 9 September by Domenico Tedesco, and corroborated by the statistics – 73% ball possession for Fenerbahçe, 608 passes (three times more than Trabzonspor), 9 shots on goal compared to only 1 for Trabzonspor… – the Yellow Canaries were unable to increase their lead in the second half, and the score remained unchanged for the rest of the match.
Turkish press slam referee’s performance
The performance of the referee, Ozan Ergün, was particularly controversial in Trabzon, where this morning the headlines in the local press about the match in Istanbul showed the indignation of the local fans: ‘Shame for Turkish football’, ‘Dark night’, ‘Refereeing massacre’ or ‘We have to get these referees to stop whistling’ were some of the headlines Trabzon woke up to today.
The result gives Fenerbahçe their third consecutive win in five rounds of the Turkish Super Lig, giving them a total of 10 points with a game in hand, and putting them in second place behind Galatasaray, who are still unbeatable and who beat Eyüpspor away from home to take their lead to 15 points and three rounds at the top of the table.
