Galatasaray and Beşiktaş drew 1-1 in the eighth round of the Turkish Super Lig in Istanbul. The intense and controversial match ended the reigning league champions‘ long run of consecutive wins.
Beşiktaş took the lead through Tammy Abraham’s 12th-minute strike on the edge of the six-yard box after the keeper had denied Orkun Kökçü’s initial shot. However, the visitors suffered a setback soon after: defender Wilfried Singo had to leave the field in the 25th minute due to a muscle injury and was replaced by Sallai.
The game was further complicated for Galatasaray when Davinson Sanchez was sent off with a straight red card in the 34th minute for bringing down Rafa Silva, who had made a solo run and was on his own in front of the goalkeeper. The action left the Lions with only ten players for the remainder of the game.
Osimhen came to blows and was yellow carded
The atmosphere heated up in the 40th minute after a scuffle between Victor Osimhen and Emirhan Topçu, which ended with a yellow card for both, although the main culprit appeared to be the Nigerian striker, who grabbed the Topçu by the throat for no apparent reason in what was undoubtedly the most tense moment of the match. Interestingly, while all this was going on, David Jurásek was making a theatrical scene barely a metre away trying to simulate a foul… But the performance was not very good, nobody paid attention to him and the referee didn’t take any notice.
In the second half, İlkay Gündoğan equalised in the 55th minute after taking advantage of a Lucas Torreira recovery near the box following a defensive error, making the score 1-1.
The derby result keeps Galatasaray top of the Trendyol Süper Lig with 22 points, but they suffer their first setback of the season and see their run of 15 consecutive wins come to an end. Beşiktaş, meanwhile, have just 13 points and remain in mid-table, but are proving to be the worst nightmare for Okan Buruk’s side, who also suffered their only league defeat to the Black Eagles last season.
