Beşiktaş secured their second win of the season and moved up in the Süper Lig standings after defeating bottom side Kocaelispor in the closing game of Matchday 7 last night in Istanbul, just a week before they take on Galatasaray in the derby.
The game started with an early goal from Rafa Silva with just four minutes gone: the move started in midfield when the Portuguese midfielder himself took the ball in alone; after a scramble for the ball on the edge of the box, the ball was picked up by Britain’s Tammy Abraham, who again laid it off to Silva in the six-yard box and he only had to push it to make the 1-0, sparking euphoria in Istanbul’s Tüpraş stadium.
Beşiktaş did not slumber after the first goal and continued their attacks on the Kocaelispor goal, and the reward for that insistence came early: just six minutes later Václav Černý was alone in front of the goalkeeper, Jovanović, who had a disastrous intervention that left the Czech winger with a goal on a plate, who could almost be said to have gloated before pushing the ball into the back of the net.
In the 35th minute Petković scored a spectacular bicycle kick from a free kick that skimmed past Mert Günok’s post. It was arguably the most dangerous move for Kocaeli’s side in the first half; but it was only after the break, five minutes in, that the Anatolian team was rewarded for its efforts when Tayfur Bingöl‘s lucky shot, after a mistake by Günok, rebounded into the net. Bingöl, who played for Beşiktaş between 2022 and 2025, did not want to celebrate the goal.
A win for the Black Eagles ahead of the derby
On 64 minutes it was another Portuguese, Jota Silva, who scored for Beşiktaş, although the goal was disallowed without protest for obvious offside. Ten minutes later, Jovanović redeemed himself with a superb save under the sticks from Rafa Silva’s shot. The goal with which the Black Eagles sought to seal their victory came in stoppage time with a header from Jota Silva after a corner kick: the ball hit the far post and again Jovanović tried to clear it under the posts, but it was too late and the ball had crossed the line.
This win against the bottom team in the Turkish Super League allows Beşiktaş to breathe and move up four places to fifth in the table, taking them to 12 points with a game in hand. Although Beşiktaş played well and the result serves to give the team coached by Sergen Yalçın a boost, it could be just a mirage and the next week they face a very tough test, playing away from home against none other than the reigning champions and current leaders of the Turkish league: Galatasaray.
