Trabzonspor, Beşiktaş

Beşiktaş only managed a draw in Trabzon

Beşiktaş could only manage a draw in yesterday’s late Turkish league match in Trabzon on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, despite the home side playing with a man down for most of the game.

It was just 13 minutes into the game when Edin Višća made an ugly and unnecessary tackle in midfield on Rafa Silva, which left the Portuguese writhing in pain on the turf. After consulting the VAR, the referee issued a straight red card, leaving the Black Sea Storm with 10 players for the remainder of the match.

Despite this heavy setback, it was Trabzonspor who opened the scoring after 17 minutes with a powerful header from Okay Yokuşlu after a free kick near the box. However, the physical strain of the home players having to cover for their absent team-mate gradually took its toll, and Beşiktaş’s mounting pressure on their opponents’ goal finally paid off on 39 minutes when Gedson Fernandes and Jonas Svensson combined beautifully to equalise.

Trabzonspor goalkeeper, star of the match

In the second half, despite the match lasting almost 100 minutes and the Black Eagles’ numerical advantage, they failed to convert their numerous chances; with Trabzonspor defending at the back and coming out on the counter when they could, the Istanbul team constantly bombarded the rival’s goal and clearly dominated possession and scoring opportunities, but thanks to the interventions of Uğurcan Çakır – Trabzonspor’s goalkeeper, and star of the night – the scoreboard would not move.

After this draw against Trabzonspor, Beşiktaş dropped to 4th place with 10 points, 3 points behind Süper Lig leader Fenerbahçe, who beat Kasımpaşa yesterday. For its part, reigning league champion Galatasaray had no compassion and won 5-0 over Çaykur Rizespor.
