Beşiktaş‘s trip to the home of last season’s league champions Trabzonspor on Sunday proved costly, and despite dominating possession in the Turkish Black Sea coastal city, the Black Eagles saw the home side carve out the better scoring chances. The first of the goals came on 29 minutes with a spectacular header in the air from Nigeria’s Paul Onuachu, making the 1-0.
Just before half-time, Trabzonspor’s Greek striker Anastasios Bakasetas scored a spectacular goal from a free-kick from the edge of the box, assisted by the shoulder of Beşiktaş’s Cenk Tosun. In the 58th minute hope seemed to be restored for the Istanbul team, when Omar Colley scored a goal after a challenge in the box; however, the referee, backed by VAR, disallowed the goal after Colley himself viscerally and irrationally grabbed Eren Elmalı by the neck. Trabzonspor made it 3-0 a few minutes later with a goal from Bosnian player Edin Višća on a pass from Egyptian team-mate Trézéguet.
Following their heavy defeat in Trabzon, Beşiktaş dropped from fourth to ninth in the Turkish league standings, while Trabzonspor moved up three places to be placed fourth in the table. Fenerbahçe, who won 3-2 at home to Antalyaspor, remain leader with 9 points, followed 2 points behind by defending champions Galatasaray, who beat Samsunspor 4-2.
