Cameras capture building collapse in Istanbul

A building suddenly collapsed during urban transformation works in the Avcılar district of western Istanbul, sparking panic and outrage among local residents. The incident, which fortunately left no injuries, was recorded by security cameras in the area and by several witnesses.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Ambarlı neighbourhood, located on the coast of the Sea of Marmara by Lake Büyükçekmece. According to the Turkish news agency İHA, workers working on the demolition of an abandoned five-storey building during urban renovation works in the district lost control of the situation, and the building – which was to be dismantled floor by floor – suddenly collapsed uncontrollably, creating a large cloud of dust and causing panic among residents of the neighbourhood.

Local residents reacted with indignation at what had happened and the lack of safety in the operation, which could have led to a tragedy, although fortunately there were no casualties. Following an inspection carried out by municipal teams, the Avcılar municipality fined the company in charge of the demolition work 30,000 Turkish liras – just under 600 euros – for “polluting the environment“.

The cloud of dust during the collapse attracted the attention of many onlookers, and the moment was recorded on the mobile phones of several witnesses as well as by security cameras in the area. The images clearly show how the building suddenly collapses, generating a large amount of dust and debris that fills the area. Experts stress the need to reinforce supervision and safety measures during this type of work to avoid similar incidents, which can lead to casualties.
