Thousands of fans across all Turkey celebrated Trabzonspor’s first league champion title since 1984.
Trabzonspor ended a 38-year hiatus and was proclaimed champion of the Turkish league this Saturday, something they had not achieved since 1984, after managing to draw 2-2 at home against Antalyaspor, in a difficult game until the end.
Tens of thousands of Trabzonspor fans, who came not only from all over Turkey but also from other countries, and who were unable to enter a sold-out Trabzon Medical Park stadium, gathered in several squares and public places in this city of Turkish coast of the Black Sea, as well as in other large cities of the country, to follow live this match in which the team could be mathematically proclaimed champion.
Andreas Cornelius unleashed euphoria among the Trabzon fans when, after only 3 minutes of play, he scored the first goal with which the first half of the match ended. Six minutes into the second half, Alassane Ndao levelled the score for the Antalya team, and just 5 minutes later, the visitors had the chance to take the lead thanks to a penalty that was saved by Uğurcan Çakır, to the relief of the local team.
Just 6 minutes after Çakır averted disaster, Dorukhan Toköz scored in the 62nd minute for Trabzonspor to make it 2-1. Finally, Haji Wright scored again for the Antalya team in the 80th minute, leaving the score at 2-2. With the final whistle, thousands of fans flooded the pitch as outside the stadium and across Turkey, and absolute euphoria broke out among the supporters of the Black Sea team.

This is the first time that Trabzonspor have been crowned champion of the league in 38 years, and they do so convincingly, beating their closest rival, Fenerbahçe, by 9 points; it is also the first Super League title for his coach, Abdullah Avcı, one of the most successful coaches in recent years in Turkish football: since he took charge of the team’s bench in November 2020, he has been able to lead Trabzonspor to the top of the Turkish league.
