The Beşiktaş showed no mercy to the bottom team in the Turkish league, thrashing Adana Demirspor, who are last in the Süper Lig, and consolidating their third place in the table. Meanwhile, Galatasaray, the current leaders of the Superleague, beat Trabzonspor away on the Black Sea coast and are now within touching distance of the league title with only three games left to play this season.
The Black Eagles showed their superiority from the outset in last night’s match at the Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul, with clear dominance of the ball against their rivals and overwhelming their opponents with constant attacks on their goal. The first goal came in the 28th minute, courtesy of Rafa Silva, who slotted the ball between the legs of Dönmezer, the young Adana’s goalkeeper, after an assist from Ciro Immobile. Milot Rashica made it 2-0 with a powerful shot in the 44th minute, which the Kosovar executed after a good pass from Mustafa Erhan.
In added time in the first half, Demirspor scored their only goal, courtesy of Arda Okan Kurtulan, who headed in a shot that rebounded off the crossbar. The referee disallowed the goal to the despair of the Anatolian team’s players after the assistant flagged for offside, but the VAR eventually awarded the goal. Just a few minutes earlier, another goal by Rafa Silva had been disallowed for offside.
A team doomed to relegation
But Adana’s goal was a mirage. In the second half, Beşiktaş continued their relentless attacks on the rival’s goal, making it clear who was in charge on the pitch. Immobile scored the third for the black and whites in the 62nd minute, and in the 83rd minute, João Mário sealed the victory with the final score at 4-1 against a Demirspor side that was outclassed in every way and by then just wanted to hear the final whistle.
The victory sees Beşiktaş consolidate their third place with 58 points, just one point behind Samsunspor. Adana Demirspor, meanwhile, have now lost 27 games – winning only two matches this season – and have been mathematically relegated since 16 March, with -2 points to their name. In their defence, it must be said that the team has played this season mainly with very young players and players on loan from other seasons, due to the serious financial problems facing the club, which led to many of their players leaving the team last year.
Galatasaray on the verge of winning the title
The current league leaders, Galatasaray, also secured a 0-2 victory away to Trabzon, on the Turkish Black Sea coast, although it was not an easy game for the Lions, who had to withstand a barrage of attacks from Trabzonspor, especially in the first half. In the second half, it was goals from Abdülkerim Bardakcı in the 66th minute, with a header from a corner kick, and Spain’s Álvaro Morata in the 84th minute, with a powerful right-footed shot on the counterattack, that sealed the victory for Galatasaray.
With this result, Galatasaray adds another three points to its tally, bringing its total to 86, maintaining its eight-point lead over Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe, which thrashed Başakşehir away from home but sees its title hopes slip away. Okan Buruk’s team now need just one point to be mathematically crowned league champions for the third consecutive year, which will probably happen next Sunday in their home game against Kayserispor.
