Okan Buruk’s Galatasaray beat Tümosan Konyaspor at their Rams Park stadium in Istanbul on Matchday 6 of the Turkish Premier League, while their main rivals Fenerbahçe are now six points adrift after being held to a draw by Kasımpaşa.
Yunus Akgün opened the scoring after 23 minutes when, after Barış Alper’s initial solo effort was saved by the Konya’s keeper, Akgün collected the rebound and from almost the penalty spot he blasted a right-footed shot past Ertaş to make it 1-0.
Mauro Icardi would score the second of the night in first-half stoppage time: the Argentine scored beautifully from an incredible pass in the box from Yunus Akgün himself, the scorer of the first goal, in what was a team move that showed not only how strong the Lions are on the pitch right now, but also that the Galatasaray captain has returned to full fitness after almost a year out through injury.
In the second half, Uruguayan international and former Atlético de Madrid player Lucas Torreira scored Galatasaray’s third goal in the 64th minute with an absolutely spectacular shot from outside the box after receiving a throw-in, bringing the home fans to their feet. The consolation goal for Konyaspor – that surely deserved more – came 10 minutes from the final whistle, when after some chaotic play and a scramble for the ball on the edge of the box, Umut Nayir found himself alone with the ball and one-on-one with Uğurcan Çakır, beating the Galatasaray’s keeper.
The result moves Galatasaray, still unbeaten in the league, six points clear of Fenerbahçe, coached by Domenico Tedesco after Mourinho’s departure, who dropped to third place after drawing away to Kasımpaşa. Beşiktaş, who are on course to repeat the disaster of the past two seasons, were beaten by Göztepe, who are now second in the standings with 18 points.
