Beşiktaş, despite serious problems in recent matches, caused a surprise in last night’s intense derby, handing their first defeat this season to Galatasaray, who were reduced to ten men half an hour into the game when Frankowski was sent off: a defeat that slows down the Turkish league leaders and allows Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe to close the gap after an easy win in Bodrum.
Beşiktaş, playing in front of their fans in their Tüpraş stadium, took the lead in the 23rd minute thanks to a spectacular goal by Portuguese player Rafa Silva, who scored with a solo move after a run down the left wing. In the 32nd minute, the referee awarded a yellow card for a foul by Przemysław Frankowski on Ernest Muçi on the edge of the area, but after a VAR review of the play, a straight red card was finally issued in the 36th minute, leaving Galatasaray a man down.
Two minutes later, Muçi himself scored for Beşiktaş, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Despite being a man down, Uruguayan Lucas Torreira equalised for Galatasaray before the half-time with an incredible shot from outside the box.
In the second half, the Black Eagles maintained their dominance and in the 66th minute they scored the winning goal thanks to another Portuguese player, Gedson Fernandes, who finished off the ball in the six-yard box to beat Fernando Muslera. In the final minutes, the home side were also reduced to ten men when Semih Kılıçsoy was sent off, after the VAR awarded a direct red card for a foul on Colombian Dávinson Sánchez.
With this result, Galatasaray, unbeaten this season in the Turkish league with 22 matches won and 5 draws, suffer their first defeat although they remain leaders with 71 points, while their closest pursuer, Fenerbahçe, are 2nd with 65 points and still have one game in hand. Beşiktaş, who suffered serious playing problems that recently forced them to change coach and had gone 3 matches without a win, are now in 4th place with 47 points.
