Okan Buruk’s Galatasaray came up against an unexpected obstacle in the match played on Sunday in Istanbul against Kasımpaşa: a match in which the Lions of Istanbul only managed a draw that threatens their league leadership against a Fenerbahçe that is closing the gap, while many Galatasaray fans are already openly showing their displeasure with the game played by their team and their coach.
The first goal in the match played at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium came 12 minutes into the game, after a penalty awarded by VAR to Osimhen, which the Nigerian striker himself took. It wasn’t until the second half that the equalising goal for Kasımpaşa came, with a header in the 52nd minute from Tunisian Ben Ouanes following a corner.
Just 10 minutes later Josip Brekalo scored a beautiful goal after a counter-attack that put the home team ahead. In the 69th minute Mario Lemina equalised after a free kick on the edge of the area, and just a minute later it was again Osimhen who appeared on the scene, facing the goalkeeper and lifting the ball over him to put Galatasaray ahead on the scoreboard.
The match looked like it was going to end well for Okan Buruk’s team, who was playing to maintain their 6-point lead over their closest pursuer, when a few minutes before the end of the match the VAR intervened again and awarded a penalty to the home team for a fault by Colombian Carlos Cuesta Figueroa in the area. Haris Hajradinović converted the penalty with ease to make it 3-3. Two minutes later Osimhen scored a goal that the referee disallowed for offside.
The result, although it keeps Galatasaray in the lead with 65 points, leaves them just 4 points behind Fenerbahçe, who, after the draw in the derby of the previous matchday, won easily against Antalyaspor 3-0 a few hours later.
