Fenerbahçe came away from its visit to Beşiktaş’s stadium, who suffered a defeat in the Istanbul derby against the Yellow Canaries, who remain top after 15 rounds of the league. The clash at the Tüpraş Stadium began with Edin Dzeko’s goal after 10 minutes: he only had to push the ball into the six-yard box after a pass from Dušan Tadić; the Serbian also did his bit by scoring in the second half (63rd minute) from the penalty spot.
Earlier, Beşiktaş equalised on 24 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty to Cenk Tosun when he stood alone in front of the goal; the penalty was transformed by Chamberlain, who scored the Black Eagles’ only goal of the game; the home side was also almost down a player when the referee gave Tayfur Bingöl a red card for an alleged push on Sebastian Szymański on the edge of the box. The international Polish player, who apparently fell over on his own feet, kept quiet about the controversial decision; but not the VAR, who, after reviewing the footage, reduced the sanction to a yellow card, although it was also widely disputed by the fans.
In the final minutes of the derby, with normal time expired, Tadić missed a second penalty that was brilliantly saved by Günok. But Fenerbahçe continued to press to secure the result that kept them at the top of the league, and just four minutes later Szymański scored a beautiful goal from the edge of the box to make the score 1-3, even though Beşiktaş could surely have come out of this derby with more goals, taking into account their opponents’ chances. Galatasaray, meanwhile, remains levelled on points with Fener after beating Demirspor 3-1 on Friday.
